Full Chapter 1-3: She Hadn’t Left Her Bed for Three Days.

PART 1

By 6:30 in the morning, the Aranda family mansion in Las Lomas de Chapultepec was already awake. In the granite kitchen, the housekeepers moved about in silence; in the garden, sprinklers swept across the flawless lawn; and on the second floor, behind a white door with golden moldings, Valeria remained in bed, motionless, one hand resting on her six-month-pregnant belly.

It wasn’t sleep or exhaustion.

It was paralyzing fear.

For three days, she had refused to get out of bed.

At first, everyone dismissed it as a typical pregnancy whim. Then they claimed she was exaggerating to get her husband’s attention. Later, when Alejandro Aranda—one of the country’s most powerful businessmen—began to lose his patience, the whispers started.

“She’s hiding something,” his sister Marcela murmured in the hallway with a thin smile. “No woman locks herself away like that for no reason.”

Alejandro overheard the remark from his office. He said nothing, but his jaw tightened.

He was not a man accustomed to uncertainty.

He had built a real estate empire at the age of twenty-eight, closing deals without ever lowering his gaze. But ever since Valeria had shut herself away, he could no longer make sense of anything.

His wife no longer looked him in the eyes.

Whenever he entered the room, she clutched the blanket tightly around herself.

Whenever he asked what was wrong, she would only whisper,

“Please, Alejandro… just leave me alone today.”

And it was driving him mad.

Valeria hadn’t always been like this.

When they married, she had been radiant—a skilled art conservator working at a gallery in Coyoacán. She hadn’t come from wealth.

When Alejandro introduced her to his family, his mother, Doña Esther, greeted her with an aristocratic smile tinged with contempt.

“I hope you know how to live up to our standards,” she had said that very night.

For two years, Valeria endured humiliations disguised as elegant jokes.

Alejandro, consumed by business trips and multimillion-dollar contracts, believed she was simply adapting to the luxury around her.

He never noticed how his own family slowly closed in around his wife’s heart.

And now, pregnant with their first child, she seemed to have given up.

That morning, Alejandro climbed the stairs with cold fury.

In his hand was his cell phone, displaying a blurry photograph Marcela had sent him two nights earlier.

The image showed what appeared to be the silhouette of a man leaving through the back door at two in the morning.

The message beneath it read:

“I’m sorry to tell you this, brother… but I think Valeria is making a fool of you.”

The poison had already taken hold.

Without knocking, he pushed open the bedroom door.

Valeria lay curled on her side beneath a thick blanket. Her face was pale, and her eyes were filled with anguish—an expression Alejandro mistook for guilt.

“Get up,” he ordered.

“I can’t,” she answered, swallowing hard.

“Who was the man in that picture? Is there someone else?”

Valeria closed her eyes with infinite weariness.

“Alejandro… please… if I tell you, everything will fall apart.”

“Everything has already fallen apart!” he roared, his pride deeply wounded.

He grabbed the edge of the blanket.

Valeria tried to stop him with what little strength she had left.

“No… please…”

But Alejandro yanked it away in one violent pull.

What he saw left the air trapped in his lungs.

He couldn’t believe what was about to happen…

CHAPTER 2 – THE SECRET BENEATH THE BLANKET

Alejandro’s anger vanished in an instant.

Under the blanket, wrapped tightly around Valeria’s swollen body, were thick layers of bandages stained with fresh blood. Purple bruises covered her ribs, her back, and even her arms. A long surgical scar stretched across the left side of her abdomen.

His hands trembled.

“What… what happened to you?”

Valeria burst into tears, unable to hide the truth any longer.

“I didn’t cheat on you.”

Alejandro took a step back, his face turning pale.

“Then who did this?”

Before she could answer, someone knocked softly on the bedroom door.

It was Doña Esther.

“My son,” she said calmly, “don’t let her manipulate you.”

Alejandro slowly turned toward his mother.

For the first time in years, he noticed that Valeria was shaking—not from fear of him, but from fear of the woman standing outside the room.

“Leave,” Alejandro ordered.

His mother smiled.

“I raised you. Don’t let that girl destroy this family.”

“Leave. Now.”

The smile disappeared.

After she walked away, Valeria whispered,

“It wasn’t just her…”

She reached into the nightstand and pulled out a small voice recorder.

“I knew no one would believe me.”

She pressed PLAY.

The room filled with familiar voices.

Marcela laughed.

“If the baby disappears, Alejandro will marry someone from our circle.”

Then came Doña Esther’s cold reply.

“The doctors are already paid. She’ll think she lost the child naturally.”

Alejandro froze.

His own mother’s voice.

His own sister’s laughter.

Planning the death of his unborn child.

Valeria looked at him with empty eyes.

“They’ve been poisoning me for weeks.”

Silence swallowed the room.

For the first time in his life, Alejandro realized that the enemy had never been outside his mansion.

It had always lived inside it.

CHAPTER 3 – THE NIGHT OF BETRAYAL

Within an hour, Alejandro secretly called the family’s longtime physician.

After examining Valeria, the doctor looked horrified.

“There are traces of heavy metal poisoning.”

Alejandro stared at him.

“Can you prove it?”

“With blood tests… yes.”

The doctor’s expression darkened.

“But if she’d stayed untreated another week…”

He looked at Valeria’s belly.

“…you would have lost both mother and child.”

Alejandro felt his knees weaken.

His mind replayed every moment he had doubted her.

Every accusation.

Every cold word.

He had almost become the weapon his own family wanted him to be.

That evening, he pretended nothing had changed.

At dinner, Doña Esther poured wine with perfect elegance.

Marcela smiled across the table.

“How’s our poor Valeria?”

Alejandro forced a smile.

“Much better.”

Neither woman noticed the tiny camera hidden inside the crystal chandelier.

Nor did they realize that every conversation in the dining room was being recorded.

Around midnight, Alejandro watched the live feed from his office.

Marcela entered the kitchen.

She opened a cabinet and removed a small brown bottle.

She poured several drops into a glass of milk.

Then she whispered,

“Tomorrow it’ll finally be over.”

Alejandro didn’t wait another second.

Security guards surrounded the kitchen.

Marcela dropped the bottle.

Doña Esther rushed downstairs in shock.

Alejandro held up the bottle.

“What is this?”

Neither woman answered.

The laboratory report arrived before dawn.

The liquid contained a toxic substance capable of causing miscarriage after prolonged exposure.

The evidence was undeniable.

The family empire was collapsing from within.
