She watched Ava breathe through each contraction with the detached interest of someone waiting for a plan to finish.
When the doors were finally forced open, Ava saw the yellow stripes of firefighters’ uniforms and almost cried with relief. Then Liam appeared. Her husband pushed past two rescuers, looked directly at both women, and ran to Serena. Without asking whether Ava or the baby was safe, he lifted Serena into his arms.
“Liam,” Ava gasped, reaching towards him. “Please.”
He did not stop. Serena rested her head against his shoulder, then turned just enough for Ava to see the small smile on her lips.
“He chose me,” she whispered.

An emergency delivery followed. Ava named the tiny girl Hope because hope was the only thing Liam had not taken from her.
Liam tried to explain. Serena had texted him from inside the elevator, saying she was bleeding internally and could not breathe. He claimed he had panicked. Ava listened without interrupting, then asked the question that silenced him.
“Why did your mistress have your private number, and why did she know you were leading the rescue?”
The truth came out in pieces. Serena worked as an events manager at the same luxury hotel where the elevator had failed. She and Liam had been having an affair for nearly a year. Liam insisted he had ended it two weeks earlier, after Ava told him they were expecting a daughter. Serena had refused to accept it. She told Liam that she was pregnant too, then claimed she had miscarried because of the stress he had caused. Liam had hidden everything from his wife.

The most chilling evidence came from the audio. During the fifth hour, while Ava drifted in and out of consciousness, Serena made a call through a second phone hidden inside her boot.
“If the baby doesn’t survive, he’ll come back to me,” she said. “When they open the doors, make sure Liam sees my message first.”
The call led police to Noah Vale, Serena’s younger brother, a subcontracted lift technician with gambling debts. Serena had paid those debts and promised him more money to help stage what she called “a harmless delay”. Noah confessed when detectives played the recording. Serena had planned to trap Ava long enough to cause a medical emergency while arranging for Liam to believe Serena was the one in mortal danger. She wanted Ava humiliated, the baby endangered and Liam publicly forced to choose between them.
Then Serena’s final secret was exposed: she had never been pregnant.

Liam finally understood that his affair had become a weapon. Liam was dismissed from the fire service after an internal investigation found that he had lied to police and concealed his relationship with Serena during the early inquiry. He begged Ava for another chance, promising therapy, honesty and a lifetime of regret.
Ava gave him only one answer.
“Regret is what you live with. Forgiveness is what I choose for myself.”
She forgave him eventually, but she did not take him back. Forgiveness, she learned, was not the same as reopening the door to someone who had already chosen to leave.
