SHE BEGGED HER HUSBAND TO LET HER FALL—THEN THE WOMAN WITH THE KNIFE REVEALED WHY THEIR BABY HAD TO DIE

The white sedan groaned against the broken guardrail as half its weight hung above the sea.

Inside, Emily Carter’s bound hands rested against her pregnant stomach. Salt wind tore through the shattered window, lifting strands of brown hair across her tear-streaked face. Beneath her, hundreds of feet below, waves struck the rocks like distant explosions.

“Help!” she screamed. “Please—I’m pregnant!”

Behind the sedan, Margaret Voss sat calmly in a black SUV.

She tightened both hands around the steering wheel and smiled.

“One last push,” she whispered.

The SUV surged forward.

Metal struck metal with a violent crack. The sedan lurched over the barrier, its front wheels disappearing into open air. Emily’s body slammed against the seat belt. A scream tore from her throat as the car tipped towards the abyss, held only by its crushed rear axle and a strip of twisted steel.

Margaret stepped out carrying a knife.

Daniel appeared around the bend seconds later, running so quickly that he slipped on the road and struck the pavement. Blood opened across his forehead, but he forced himself upright and staggered towards the car.

“Emily!”

She turned towards his voice. “Daniel, stay back!”

He reached the passenger door and pulled it open. The movement caused the sedan to shift another inch towards the cliff.

Daniel caught Emily beneath the arms.

“I’ve got you.”

“The car is falling!”

“I know.”

He braced one foot against the guardrail and wrapped his arm around her waist. The metal beneath him shrieked. Emily’s bound hands clutched his jacket while their unborn child moved sharply inside her.

Margaret approached without hurry, the knife gleaming beside her grey suit.

Daniel looked over his shoulder. “If it’s me you want, let her go.”

Margaret’s expression remained almost gentle.

“Fall with her.”

She raised her foot and kicked the damaged rear panel.

The car dropped.

Daniel’s hand closed around the guardrail as his body slid across the road. His fingers caught the cold steel at the final moment. Emily hung below him, still trapped by the seat belt, while the weight of the car dragged them both towards the edge.

“Let me go!” she sobbed. “Save yourself!”

Daniel’s bleeding forehead pressed against hers.

“I’d rather fall than lose you.”

Margaret watched them struggle. “How touching.”

Then she leaned closer and said the words that changed everything.

“That child was never supposed to exist.”

Daniel stared at her.

Three weeks earlier, Emily had found a locked tin box among the belongings of her late mother, Catherine. Inside were adoption papers, photographs and a letter addressed to Emily in case Catherine died before telling her the truth.

Emily had not been born Emily Lawson.

Her birth name was Amelia Voss.

She was Margaret’s niece.

Margaret’s older brother, Jonathan Voss, had founded a medical technology company with Daniel’s father. When Jonathan and his wife died in a boating accident twenty-nine years earlier, their infant daughter vanished. Margaret claimed the child had drowned with them and inherited her brother’s controlling shares.

But Catherine Lawson, a nurse and close friend of Jonathan’s wife, had rescued the baby from the boat before it sank. She believed the accident had been deliberate. Terrified that Margaret would finish what she had begun, Catherine changed the child’s name and raised her in secret.

The letter contained a final warning.

If Margaret learns you are alive, she will come for you.

Emily had shown the documents to Daniel. Together, they contacted a solicitor and requested DNA testing. The results confirmed that she was Jonathan Voss’s daughter and the rightful owner of shares worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

More importantly, the family trust stated that if Amelia had a child, control of the company would pass permanently to her bloodline.

Margaret’s empire was about to disappear.

That morning, she abducted Emily from a maternity clinic, bound her hands and forced her into the sedan. She demanded that Emily sign away her inheritance. When Emily refused, Margaret drove her towards the cliff, planning to make the deaths of a pregnant woman and her unborn child look like a tragic road accident.

What Margaret did not know was that Daniel had activated the tracking device hidden inside Emily’s wedding bracelet.

She also did not see the police vehicles approaching from the opposite direction.

Detective Lena Brooks stepped from the first car with her weapon raised.

“Drop the knife!”

Margaret spun around.

For one moment, her confidence vanished.

Then she rushed towards Daniel and drove the knife down towards his hand.

Emily swung her bound wrists with all the strength she had left. The rope struck Margaret’s arm, knocking the blade across the road.

Daniel’s fingers slipped.

A rescue officer threw himself flat and caught Daniel by the wrist. Two others secured a cable to the sedan while police dragged Margaret away from the edge.

She screamed that the company belonged to her.

“It was mine for twenty-nine years!”

Emily was pulled free moments before the axle broke. The empty sedan plunged from the cliff and disappeared into the sea.

At the hospital, doctors found that both Emily and the baby had survived. Daniel sat beside her bed with bandages around his head and hands, refusing to release her fingers even while he slept.

Police searched Margaret’s home and discovered evidence proving that she had arranged the deaths of Jonathan and his wife. A mechanic admitted that Margaret had paid him to damage their boat’s fuel line. Bank records also showed that she had bribed an official to certify the infant Amelia as dead.

The kidnapping had been captured by the clinic’s security cameras. Margaret’s final words at the cliff were recorded by Daniel’s telephone.

She was convicted of murder, kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud and conspiracy. Her assets were frozen, and the fortune she had controlled for nearly three decades was returned to Emily.

Yet Emily did not keep the empire Margaret had killed to possess.

She sold the company’s private luxury division and used the money to establish maternity shelters, legal services and emergency transport for women escaping violence. The programme was named after Catherine Lawson, the woman who had saved her as a baby and spent her life protecting the truth.

Months later, Emily gave birth to a daughter.

They named her Catherine.

On the first anniversary of the cliff rescue, Daniel took Emily back to the coast. They did not approach the broken section of road. Instead, they stood on a quiet beach below, their daughter asleep against Emily’s chest.

“I really thought you should let me go,” Emily said.

Daniel looked towards the cliffs.

“I know.”

“You could have died.”

“So could you.”

She rested her head on his shoulder. “We survived because you held on.”

Daniel placed one hand over hers and the other gently against their daughter’s back.

“No,” he said. “We survived because neither of us let fear decide who deserved to live.”

Above them, the road remained scarred where the guardrail had broken.

Below it, a family walked home together.
