Adrian believed her.

Three weeks earlier, Claire had discovered irregular payments inside Westwood Capital, the investment firm Adrian inherited from his father. More than twenty million dollars had been transferred to consulting companies with no employees, no offices and no legitimate clients.
Every payment had been approved by Serena, the company’s chief financial officer—and Adrian’s closest family friend.

She planned to confront Adrian after the charity gala taking place in their penthouse that night.

The signature authorising that arrangement belonged to Adrian.

Serena was Adrian’s half-sister.

Adrian answered, “So you tried to kill my wife and child?”
“I tried to take back what your father stole from me.”
“No,” he said. “You became worse than he ever was.”

Maya testified about the planted evidence and the earlier investigation. Financial experts traced twenty-three million dollars to Serena’s offshore accounts. A mechanic also admitted Serena had paid him years earlier to damage the brakes on Claire’s mother’s car.
The old accident had been murder.

The stolen money was recovered.
Claire gave birth five weeks later to a healthy boy named Oliver.
